The founding principles

How we choose to show up.

These are not slogans or membership tests. They are practical commitments for reflection, relationships, decisions and action across every SOTG initiative.

People working through a difficult conversation with calm accountability
01

Be personally accountable

Take conscious ownership of your choices, contribution and capacity to improve.

Accountability begins by noticing where your decisions, influence and inaction affect other people or systems—and choosing the next responsible step.

02

Be continuously introspective

Look for revelation rather than reassurance, and remain willing to learn and change.

Introspection creates room to update your mind. It asks us to seek useful truth, including when it challenges our identity or preferred story.

03

Be actively non-judgmental

Seek context, dignity and understanding without treating every choice as acceptable.

Non-judgment is active curiosity. It respects dignity and context while preserving the ability to set boundaries and name harmful choices.

04

Unpack conflicts calmly

Treat disagreement as a layered problem to understand and solve—not a contest to win.

Conflict contains history, needs, incentives and competing interpretations. Calm unpacking makes better solutions and stronger relationships possible.

05

Respect the spirit of the rules

Choose integrity and positive contribution over loopholes, technicalities and minimum compliance.

Rules cannot anticipate every situation. The spirit of the rules asks whether a choice protects trust, fairness and the purpose the rule was meant to serve.

Principles in action

Shared language for difficult work.

Use the principles in coaching, governance, partnerships, events, peer learning and local implementation—not only when things are easy.

Before a decision

Who is affected? What assumptions are we making? What responsibility is ours?

During disagreement

What layers are underneath the stated conflict? What can be understood before it is judged?

After action

What happened? What did we learn? What should change before the next cycle?

Put the principles to work.
